“According to a study done at Washington State University, the average American child eats 275 pounds of sugar per year – almost 3/4 of a pound per day! The problem with this sugar consumption is that sugar contains no vitamins, protein or fiber. It usually is consumed instead of nutritious foods. Sugar, while it contains no nutrients, does cause health problems. For example, just 100 grams of sugar (the equivalent of a candy bar and a soft drink) can suppress the immune system for up to 6 hours. According to Judith Hallfrish at the USDA – “When sugar consumption rises to about 30% of calories, there are elevations in blood pressure, triglycerides, total and LDL (bad) cholesterol, uric acid, glucose and insulin responses.” Most people believe that the real damage done by sugar is weight gain, but that is only a small part of its destructive capability!
Where does all this sugar come from? Soft drinks, cokes and baked goods are some obvious sources. But some foods perceived to be “healthy” contain amazing amounts of sugar. The following chart illustrates this point:
